Andrew completed his Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Adelaide in 1997 and started work in early 1998 for KBR (Kellogg Brown & Root Pty Ltd - previously known as Kinhill, Brown & Root Services and Halliburton KBR). After 12 months working in Adelaide as a mechanical engineer, the company relocated Andrew to Brisbane and later to Rockhampton, to undertake some project management roles.
In mid-2000, KBR relocated Andrew to Perth and in early 2001 he started design work on the new 30-storey Woodside Building at 240 St Georges Terrace. Andrew spent almost 2 years on this project, designing the base building air conditioning, supervising construction of all services for the first 12 months of construction and later reviewing the fitout design work done by others. Andrew's work on this project has been a career highlight given the size and scope of the project. Late in 2002, Andrew returned to hometown Adelaide and took up the role of Quality Engineer on construction of a new process plant for 6 months before taking up the role of QA/QC Manager, Australia area, in March 2003. Dr Darren Cundy
Coming from within the country’s largest R&D provider, the CSIRO, and being aware that there was a pressing need to increase the efficiency with which scientific innovation is converted to economic benefit, the Adelaide University’s MSTC course offered me the holistic solution I was looking for. Whilst the MSTC program provides detailed and hands-on experience in each of its courses, the MSTC also provided me with a sound appreciation of the fundamental issues connected with the stages of commercialising technology.
The spectrum of topics that the program covers was undoubtedly important in securing my position in Rothschild Venture Capital group.
Trained originally in organic chemistry, Dr Cundy worked at CSIRO Molecular Science in the custom synthesis area as a Senior Research Scientist, before spending two years as Executive Officer to the Chief Executive of CSIRO. Dr Cundy was then seconded for an 18mth period to work as a manager with Rothschild Venture Capital Group in their e-Fund and as an Investment Manager with the Genesis Preseed Fund*. This project was developed to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the venture capitalists.
* GBS Venture Partners was formed after a November 2002 management buyout of Rothschild Bioscience Managers Limited from NM Rothschild & Sons (Aust) Ltd . |

Dr Derek Rogers
Imagine that you’re in a plane and the pilot says, "Here, hang onto the controls for a moment". Flying the plane represents running a company and while many people could fly a plane once it is in the air or run a company while it is operating, to me the MSTC is about take off and landing, starting new ventures and creating something worthwhile out of nothing. I get to apply my knowledge from the MSTC each day and I recommend people learn the skills here because even if you never want to run your own business it is important to understand how to commercialise ideas be that within your own start-up company or within an existing company. More importantly though, you get to meet some wonderful people.
Dr Derek Rogers is currently the Product Manager for Ground Systems on project AIR 5416, Echidna with BAE Systems. A role in which he leads the development of five products to the total value of around $30 million. Dr Rogers is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the Department of Electrical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Adelaide, Adjunct Senior Research Fellow with the Defence and Lecturer in Commercialisation with the University of Canterbury New Zealand. He also runs two businesses in Photography and commercialisation training. Prior to BAE Systems Dr Rogers worked with the University of South Australia, the Motorola Australia Software Centre and the Centre for Telecommunications Information Networking, a University of Adelaide startup company. His career and interests have taken him all over the world, to every continent and 39 countries to date. He has published over 30 papers and was the inaugural winner of the prestigious IREE Neville Theile award in 2004 along with a rare leadership award in 2003, the first non-US student to win the award, from the University of Texas at the Austin for helping staff and students alike during his Masters of Science and Technology Commercialisation degree; a joint degree between the University of Adelaide and University of Texas in Austin. Mr Horden Wiltshire
The Adelaide University MSTC is an outstanding world class experience. I found the experiential learning approach, working with real technologies and businesses, to be invaluable. I am applying the skills developed during the course on a daily basis as the CEO of one of Australia’s most exciting technology start-ups. The course is a must for those wishing to embark on a highly exciting yet demanding career in technology commercialisation.
Horden is in the role of Chief Executive Officer of one of Australia’s most exciting high technology companies, m.Net Corporation. Horden previously served as m.Net’s Director of Projects and Operations from the company’s inception. In this role he was responsible for the rollout of the company’s 3rd generation telecommunications network and wireless local area network, managing a number of industry specific mobile application development projects and launching the Gallery 4 application developer initiative.
Since becoming CEO Horden has transformed m.Net into Australia's leading mobile marketing solutions company. In 2008 m.Net was listed in the Deloitte Fast 50 for the second year in a row, ranked 5th in the BRW Magazine fast 100 and awarded by the Australian advertising industry the prestigious title of Digital Services Company of the Year.
Horden has held a number of leadership roles in high technology environments in an earlier career in defence, including command of one of Australia’s next generation submarines. Horden’s academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons), an MBA and a Masters of Science and Technology Commercialisation. |
