The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor
Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Australia Research Project
The Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation, and Innovation Centre (ECIC) is an equal partner with Swinburne University’s Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship in managing the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research project in Australia. This survey, coordinated by the London Business School in the UK and Babson College in the USA, is probably the world's largest study of entrepreneurship behaviour. It covers more than 40 countries each year. The 2006 Australian survey produced a wealth of information about entrepreneurship, of particular interest to local authorities that are trying to encourage small business. There is a core set of questions on the annual survey of around 2,000 participants, to enable international comparisons; however, there is also scope for sponsors to add additional questions. This is possible in Australia at a national or state level.
The three key research questions covered by the GEM study are:
- To what extent does the level of entrepreneurial activity vary across countries?
- Does the level of entrepreneurial activity affect a country's economic growth rate and prosperity?
- What makes a country entrepreneurial?
In recent years, Australia has been one of the most entrepreneurially active countries. Any organization interested in obtaining further information is invited to contact the ECIC.
